Trajan Decius”Dragon Standard”ANCIENT SILVER ROMAN COIN Picture(s) and Description:

Cover Your Ears From The Terrible Whistling For The Draco Standard IsFlying Proudly Into Battle... The Obverse: This is a very nice coin of G. Messius Quintas Traianus Decius, also known as Emperor Trajan Decius. Decius instituted the first general persecution of Christians and others who would not sacrifice to the Emperor. Emperor-worship at this point had become synonymous with loyalty to Rome, and these sacrifices were expected or even demanded. The Emperor had come to believe in his own divinity---you can see him on the front of this coin wearing the radiate crown of the Sun God, Sol. The Sol Invictus cult was on the rise, and worship of the Sun God, or his emissary the Emperor, was being encouraged by those in power in Rome. Trajan Decius ruled from 249 A.D. until 251 A.D., when he was killed by the Goths in Dacia. This is an antoninianus, and it is made of silver. The reverse shows Dacia standing with a Draco Standard. This was sort of a windsock with a carved or metal head in the shape of a dragon, sometimes a wolf or a boar. It was carried into battle on the end of a long stick, and as the wind blew through the mouth of the dragon it is believed to have made an eery whistling or roaring noise that signaled approaching doom. It has a slightly rough surface but that does little to detract from the overall appearance of this truly rare gem. It is 22.64mm across and weighs 2.9 grams. This beautiful relic was struck at the mint in Rome, the Eternal City itself. This coin is ancient, authentic, and comes with a full color signed lifetime authenticity guarantee. It will be shipped inside of a long term storage coin flip with all of the details listed on a card inside (size, weight, obverse and reverse features, metal content, mint location, etc...). The winning bidder will have this ancient coin shipped out within one business day First Class U.S. Mail (with a tracking number for Domestic packages). First Class shipping is free worldwide. Registered Mail is $12.00 and is required on International shipments totaling $100 or more (unless prior arrangements have been made with Coin Altar). Payment is due at the end of auction and must be received within seven days of auction close. To subscribe to my newsletter click here: Receive Coin Altar News Thank You For Enjoying My Coins!!
